Review: Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO! – Worth It?
Are you hesitant to spend $55 on Dragon Ball Sparking ZERO? Stay tuned, because today I will tell you if Dragon Ball Sparking ZERO is worth it with this review, and if it is as good as they say. I want to clarify from the start that this is an analysis with a bit of MY opinion, so it won't be entirely objective. Also, note that I tried the game on Steam, not on PS5 or Xbox.
Gameplay
I must say I tested the game using a PS5 controller, but the controls are quite "easy" to learn since we have a tutorial at the beginning of the game. However, during the frenzy of the fights, you might forget some combos. The game displays the combinations you can use to perform iconic attacks from the series in the lower left corner, depending on the character you are using, of course.
Also, when fighting opponents, you can completely destroy some objects in the area, like piled rocks, mountains, and other objects in the fighting stage. This obviously adds more dynamism to the game, making it more than just a regular fighting game—you can also interact with the background.
Graphics
In terms of graphics, it's a 9/10. I didn't give it a 10 because my computer had some issues running it at the highest graphical quality, but without a doubt, the graphics of this game are fantastic. It takes you back to the times when you watched Dragon Ball, but even better. It's incredible what they achieved with this video game.
Speaking briefly about the game's fight's, what can I say—it's simply spectacular. You can fight against opponents as if you were inside the series, you can fly, recharge your ki, perform attacks you see in the series, and destroy objects in the environment as mentioned earlier. All of this is accompanied by the graphic experience. If you want a fighting game with the Dragon Ball atmosphere, buying this video game is a must.
Story Mode
The story mode is not the most striking part of this game, as it doesn't closely resemble the original series. Nevertheless, it is quite enjoyable. You have loading screens that tell you a little story before you fight someone. For me, it's a 7/10 because I give more importance to the online mode than the story mode, but that's just my preference.
I also forgot to mention that the story mode is divided among several well-known characters from the saga: Goku, Vegeta, Frieza, Gohan, and a few others. Each has their own stories that span several planets. It's nothing groundbreaking, but this story mode is quite decent.
Community Mods
The community for this video game is so great that mods have already been released. It's incredible. You can't ignore your game's community for less than two minutes before they release a version of the game on a Nokia phone. The same goes for mods— the standard version of the game hasn't even been released yet, and there are already quite a few funny mods for Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO. It's admirable. An example is below:
Conclusion of the Dragon Ball Sparking! ZERO Review
After mentioning all these key and important points, it's time to make a decision with this review. Is Dragon Ball Sparking ZERO worth it? Based on what you have read throughout this post, you might think that yes, I believe it is worth it, and you are right. Not only because of the game itself but also due to other external factors. For example, the game's size is 27 GB, which is relatively small for a AAA fighting game in 2024. It's absurd; it takes up almost no space on your PC or console. Another external point is the game's price. At least where I bought it (Steam), it is reasonably priced—$55 for a AAA game.
Considering that all AAA games hover around $70, it's an excellent price for such a great game.
But don't just take my word for it. Several YouTubers, streamers, and even critics say that it's a beautiful video game. Therefore, I will leave an image of the game's score on Metacritic below. As you can see, in their review they say Dragon Ball Sparking ZERO! is worth it.
